Hallelujah rufus wainwright11/8/2023 ![]() ![]() With Waronkers backing Wainwright’s self titled debut was released in 1998 to critical acclaim. Wainwright has described how his father recognised his homosexuality early on and cites mouthing to Blondie in the back of the car as a sign of what was to come he claims his sexuality was something neither of his parents could handle.įast forward a few years and it was in fact Loudon Wainwright III who was most impressed with his son’s early demo tapes and in turn Dreamworks Exec Lenny Waronker. By age six Wainwright was playing piano and by thirteen he was on the road touring with ‘The McGarrigle Sisters and Family’ a folk group featuring Sister Martha Mother Kate and Aunt Anna. Wainwright himself describes the album as ‘an encapsulation of my youth’ but let’s be clear this is Wainwright’s youth, a youth I suspect very different to the one enjoyed by most. So let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start (sorry couldn’t resist) Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright was born in New York to folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III in 1973, much has been made of his recently turning 40 as though this ‘Best Of’ has been set to coincide with reaching that landmark age. Opera is certainly a genre that has influenced Wainwright, lyrics from librettos appear alongside references from other realms of Theatre ‘Oh what a world’ the final words from The Wicked Witch Of The West as she melts in the land of Oz. Those more familiar with Wainwright’s work will know his songs are often categorised as ‘popera’ or ‘pop opera’. ![]() ‘Oh what a world’ commands attention from the get go the intensity of the choir, the richness of Wainwright’s vocals, the density of the strings the horns, the fabulous theatricality of it all. ![]()
